National Lazy Day – 5 Wellbeing Benefits

National Lazy Day 2017 is today 10th August!

Well I could not believe it when I saw this one on the list for today’s National Day’s that’s celebrated around the world.

Where has this unique day has come from? And why is it being recognised?  Why have I only just heard of it?

According to National Day Calendar website today celebrated National Shapewear Day, National Connecticut Day, National Lazy Day, National S’mores Day.

I could of chosen to blog about at least 3 out of the 4 celebrations today, but being a self-care advocate it had to be the National Lazy Day for me.   So, here’s a little bit of background for you.  It was first celebrated around 1980’s and is mostly celebrated in US and Columbia where people make a big deal out of the celebration by walking outdoors in their PJ’s and greeting passers by with a smile.  Staying in bed most or all of the day in their P.J.’s, just lazing around doing absolutely nothing.  Now I do not know if it is all true or not but this is what I sourced from Google (and Google knows everything)!

I think with the self-love movement so strong at the moment with people seeking alternative ways to banish burnout and embrace the change of a slow pace of life, I think it is only a matter of time before this national day will become a big thing in the UK too.  People are starting to feel the benefits of slowing down, unplugging and just chilling out more, by looking at new ways to explore lifestyles changes that promotes wellbeing.

Anyway, I think it is a great thing to celebrate doing nothing on your own or with other people doing nothing, even if it is only for one day.  It gives us a chance to be still and just experience being in the moment of doing nothing and not planning to do anything.  Maybe have endless cups of tea all day.  Invite friends round for a Netflix binge of your favourite shows.  Or if you have a garden, imagine lazing in the sun swaying gently in a hammock with a good book.  All of the above sounds like total bliss to me.

5 wellbeing benefits from experiencing a lazy day:-

  1. You get to catch up on your sleep and allow your body to rest. Sleep in a couple of extra hours or catch a mid-day nap. Napping during the day is a great way to energise yourself and provides a sense of calmness when you are well rested. You will be amazed at what an extra couple of hours can do to your energy levels.
  2. Book the day off work, or if you work for yourself do not go anywhere near your emails or office to avoid any unnecessary stress.  This is your day and setting healthy boundaries and practices is a good way to feel empowered. You got this!
  3. Connect with friends and family and spend some quality time with them in person or on the phone.  This is sure to lift your spirits and give you a sense of connection which human beings need to thrive.
  4. Spend the day doing something that you would not normally do or could never find the time to do.  This will make you feel accomplished and raise your high energy vibes.
  5. Take a nice long walk in a park and empty your mind of any negative thoughts.  Walking is a great way to exercise and reduce stress.

It’s a shame that I did not realise this special day until it was late into the afternoon.  I took myself off to my local Starbucks and spent some precious me-time reading my book and soaking up the feeling of laziness to do my part in celebrating National Lazy Day 10th August 2017.   I thoroughly enjoyed the pleasure of not having to do anything more than what I wanted to do for the rest of the day.

However you choose to spend your day, just remember the celebration is today, but you can schedule a lazy day into your weekly or monthly schedule whenever you like and call it your own self-love day, celebration or something that inspires you to give yourself permission to just chillax.

Let me know if you celebrated National Lazy Day today or if you intend to create a self-love ritual day in celebrating being YOU.
